Healthcare structured cabling is an often-forgotten aspect of organizational technology, but truly is the backbone of all successful operations.
The Challenge
The medical practice’s network infrastructure had evolved over time as the facility expanded and technology requirements increased. Cabling had been added as needed, creating an infrastructure that was increasingly difficult to manage, troubleshoot, and expand.
The result was a network environment that made routine IT support more difficult and created concerns about reliability as the practice continued adding connected devices and technology.
The facility was experiencing several infrastructure challenges:
- Unreliable network connectivity: Intermittent connections created problems for staff relying on network-connected applications and systems.
- Unidentified cable runs: Existing network drops were not consistently labeled, making it difficult to determine which wall jack connected to which switch port.
- An overcrowded network closet: Patch cables and network connections had accumulated over time, making equipment difficult to access and reducing the overall organization of the telecommunications space.
- Aging cabling infrastructure: Existing cabling was not designed around the practice’s current and future requirements for wireless networking, VoIP, security devices, workstations, and other connected systems.
- Growing technology demands: Additional devices and technology throughout the facility required a more structured and scalable network foundation.
The practice needed to modernize its network infrastructure without creating unnecessary disruption to clinical operations.

Why Healthcare Structured Cabling Requires Careful Planning
Network cabling in a medical environment requires more than simply installing cable from point A to point B. Infinity Technologies planned the project around the operational requirements of the healthcare facility, including:
Patient and staff safety. Work in patient-care areas was coordinated to minimize disruption and maintain an orderly environment throughout installation.
Continuous operations. Installation activities were phased so work could be completed in sections rather than taking the entire facility offline.
Building and fire-safety requirements. Appropriate cable types, pathways, penetrations, and firestopping practices were incorporated where required by the facility and applicable building requirements.
Network reliability. The infrastructure was designed to provide a dependable foundation for systems and devices that staff rely on throughout the facility.
Security and controlled access. Network equipment and infrastructure were organized within appropriate telecommunications spaces to improve physical management and security.
Infinity Technologies’ Approach
1. Infrastructure Assessment and Walk-Through
Infinity Technologies began with an on-site assessment of the facility’s existing network infrastructure. The team reviewed existing cable pathways, network drops, telecommunications spaces, equipment locations, and areas requiring additional connectivity. Rather than simply replacing individual problem cables, the objective was to understand the infrastructure as a complete system and develop a more organized foundation for the practice’s current and future technology needs.
2. Phased Installation Planning
Because the facility remained operational, installation was planned in phases. Work was coordinated around the practice’s operations so that individual areas could be addressed without unnecessarily disrupting the entire facility. This approach allowed Infinity Technologies to complete infrastructure improvements while maintaining access to essential work areas.
3. Structured Cabling Installation
Infinity Technologies installed and organized structured network cabling throughout the facility to support workstations, wireless access points, connected devices, and other technology requirements. We strategically installed fiber optic and copper cabling based on the integration needs of each physical security solution. The cabling infrastructure was designed with scalability in mind, giving the practice a cleaner and more manageable foundation for future technology deployments.
4. Network Backbone Improvements
The project included improvements to the facility’s network backbone and telecommunications infrastructure. High-speed backbone connectivity provides the foundation for communication between network equipment and helps the organization support increasing bandwidth requirements as applications, devices, and cloud-based services.
5. Network Closet Organization
One of the most visible improvements was the reorganization of the network infrastructure. Before our collaboration, the server rack posed the greatest challenge. There was little to no documentation, and the IT team that installed the cabling ended their contract several years previously. Infinity Technologies implemented structured equipment organization, patch panels, cable management, labeling, and improved access to network connections.
The result was a network closet that was easier for IT personnel to understand, maintain, and troubleshoot. Instead of having to trace unidentified cables manually, technicians could use consistent labeling and documentation to quickly identify network connections.
The Results of Our Healthcare Structured Cabling Case Study
The project gave the medical practice a more organized, scalable, and manageable network infrastructure.
| Area | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Network cabling | Aging and inconsistently organized | Structured and organized |
| Cable identification | Difficult to trace | Consistently labeled |
| Network closet | Crowded and difficult to manage | Organized with improved cable management |
| Troubleshooting | Manual tracing required | Documentation makes identification faster |
| Wireless infrastructure | Limited by existing cabling | Infrastructure prepared for additional access points |
| Network expansion | Increasingly difficult | More scalable infrastructure |
| Documentation | Limited | Organized cable and infrastructure documentation |
| Facility disruption | Concern during infrastructure work | Installation phased around operations |
Most importantly, the practice gained a network foundation capable of supporting its ongoing technology requirements without requiring the facility to completely shut down operations for the installation.
Building a Better Foundation for Healthcare Technology
The project reinforced an important principle for healthcare organizations: network infrastructure is part of the technology ecosystem that supports daily operations. After 30 years of supporting healthcare organizations in Chicago and Northwest Indiana, we understand confidentiality and organizational standards to secure electronic health records, VoIP communications, and connected medical technology.
When cabling is poorly documented or difficult to maintain, even relatively simple technology problems can take longer to diagnose and resolve. By creating a structured, documented infrastructure, Infinity Technologies helped the practice establish a cleaner foundation for its existing technology while creating room for future growth.
What We Learned
One of the most important lessons from this healthcare structured cabling project was the value of planning the infrastructure before installation begins.
Healthcare facilities cannot always treat technology projects like conventional construction work. Patient schedules, staff workflows, clinical areas, and operational requirements all have to be considered. A detailed walk-through and phased installation strategy allowed the infrastructure work to be approached systematically while keeping the facility’s day-to-day operations at the center of the project.
